Following the media fallout from the incident this past March in which Otep Shamaya was groped by a member of the band Terror Universal, Metal Sucks has become something of an outlet for the singer.
She appeared on our podcast shortly thereafter and gave one of the most candid, honest and intriguing interviews we’ve run to date, and now her people have reached out to us again with an exclusive statement regarding another assault incident at Otep’s June 7th show at Take 20 in Belvedere, Illinois.
Petersburg; ; 727-895-3045; Anyone who has followed the band Otep knows frontwoman Otep Shamaya is no shrinking violet.
And without a doubt, Shamaya is the leader and main creative force in her band. I think that’s one of the things that may surprise a lot of people, but I really enjoy collaborating with other artists and other writers.
In a recent phone interview Shamaya pointed as an example to a moment when Benson questioned one of the verses in the song “Down,” telling her she should re-write the verse to make it stronger. “I think at the time I was very serious about leaving music,” she said.
“I’d never had anybody do that before, challenge me like that before,” Shamaya said. “I had kind of gotten tired of what was happening in the music industry, you know, all of that.
“He could have let it go, like any other (producer) would do. It didn’t have the same magic for me that it had before.
After the show, as Otep was on stage inviting people to the meet & greet at the merch table, the same man screamed out that she was a “CUNT” and charged the stage.
Well, despite my best efforts, we were unable to score an in-person interview with Otep Shamaya, due to her busy tour schedule.
We were, however, able to score an email interview and I’m happy to say it turned out great! A very big thank you to Rachel and Victory Records for making one of my dreams reality! We love One-Eyed Doll, we’ve toured with them many times and I admire their skill and passionate performances. We get to share the stage with some amazing artists and musicians and that is something we are very grateful for.
And because she is the main songwriter, because the group has been through a string of personnel changes that have left her as the sole original member of Otep -- and last but not least, because the band is named after her, there’s a tendency to see Otep and the group’s music as being entirely her baby.
She’s smart, informed, opinionated and plenty outgoing -- particularly on stage and on album.
